DESCRIPTION SITE :

5x7 safety negative photographed by Rosenfeld and Sons on June 4, 1937. Image of 127.5' W. Starling Burgess designed, Herreshoff built J class sloop RAINBOW (built 1934 in Bristol, R.I.) and 102' Pusey & Jones lightship BRENTON REEF LV-102/ WAL-525 (built 1916 in Wilmington, DE) off Brenton Reef, Newport, RI. Visible in image: port beam view of RAINBOW (J/4) on starboard close reach under marconi rigged mainsail, staysail and double-sheeted jib, pennant on mainmast and American Yacht Ensign on mainsail and port beam view of BRENTON anchored, unidentified vessel behind lightship, land in background.

NOTES AMERICA-SCOOP :

Note that Rainbow carries number J4 instead of the usual J5. Indeed, at the beginning of the 1936 season, Chandler Hovey purchased from Frederick H. Prince the yacht Weetamoe (J4). February 1937, he bought also Rainbow for the 1937 challenge but Harold Vanderbilt had kept Rainbow's mast for the new Ranger. Rainbow will be fitted with Weetamoe's rig.
