REF : 0 EDITION : 1934 DATE : 04 Jun 1937 COURSE : 0 DESCRIPTION SITE : 5x7 safety negative photographed by Rosenfeld and Sons on
June 4, 1937. Image of 127.5' W. Starling Burgess designed, Herreshoff built J
class sloop RAINBOW (built 1934 in Bristol, R.I.) and 102' Pusey & Jones
lightship BRENTON REEF LV-102/ WAL-525 (built 1916 in Wilmington, DE) off
Brenton Reef, Newport, RI. Visible in image: port beam view of RAINBOW (J/4) on

jib, pennant on mainmast and American Yacht Ensign on mainsail and port beam
view of BRENTON anchored, unidentified vessel behind lightship, land in
background. Note that Rainbow carries number J4 instead of the usual J5. Indeed, at the beginning of the 1936 season, Chandler Hovey purchased from Frederick H. Prince the yacht Weetamoe (J4). February 1937, he bought also Rainbow for the 1937 challenge but Harold Vanderbilt had kept Rainbow's mast for the new Ranger. Rainbow will be fitted with Weetamoe's rig.
