The Last Beat depicts two classic yachts, Shamrock and Columbia, in the last of their famous America's Cup races in 1899. The race was held along the Jersey shore on October 20th and the run down to the mark was described by one American author as 'the finest fifteen mile run in international yachting history'. The two craft raced neck and neck until the last beat, when Columbia finally edged ahead. Once in the lead, Columbia turned the stake boat faster than her rival and was eventually victorious by over six minutes.

NOTES AMERICA-SCOOP :

THE AMERICA'S CUP WILL REMAIN HERE; Columbia Makes it Three Straight from Shamrock. WON BY OVER SIX MINUTES

NEWPORT, R.I., Oct. 20. -- The cup is safe, and Columbia is the gem of the ocean. The yachting supremacy of the United States is just where it was before the formidable Shamrock was turned out of the brain of Will Fife of Fairlie, and there is a place for another challenger as soon as one can be found who will undertake the task of “lifting” the cup....
