Jacques La Grange, 'The Start of the Race, 1899', color woodcut, edition 500, 1934. Signed and numbered '21/500' in pencil. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper, with margins (1 1/4 to 1 7/16 inches), in excellent condition. A work from La Grange’s celebrated series of woodcuts 'Drama and Color in the America's Cup Races'.

La Grange’s depiction of the 1899 America’s Cup Race shows the two contenders, the challenger 'Shamrock' (on the right), and the defender 'Columbia' vying for the lead. This 10th challenge for the Cup took place in the New York City harbor and consisted of a best of five races between the 'Columbia', entered by the New York Yacht Club, and Sir Thomas Lipton's 'Shamrock', representing the Royal Ulster Yacht Club (Northern Ireland). 'Columbia' won all three races against 'Shamrock'.
