REF : 0 EDITION : 1899 DATE : 1899 COURSE : 0 DESCRIPTION SITE : Jacques La Grange, 'Columbia Passes Shamrock II', color woodcut, edition 500, 1934. Signed and numbered '21/500' in pencil. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper, with margins (1/2 to 2 1/8 inches), in excellent condition. From La Grange’s celebrated series 'Drama and Color in the America's Cup Races'. La Grange's work depicts a decisive moment in the third (last) race of the 1901 America's Cup series when the defender 'Columbia' passed the 'Shamrock II' on the third leg of the triangular course. The two boats slipped over the finish line side by side, the distance between them only 2 seconds after a 30-mile race. The 'Columbia' won all three races by narrow margins, providing some of the most exciting races that had been held for the Cup up to that time. NOTES AMERICA-SCOOP :LICENCE : Public domain |
