Lines as taken from the model loaned to Thomas W. Lawson by Dr H.A.
Yeomans of Belleville, to whom Cuthbert had given it prior to departing for New
York. Lawson also published a pen and ink drawing from an 1886 [sic] photo
loaned by Lt. Col. William N. Ponting, also of Belleville (differences in rig
were noted.) Vide "The Lawson's History of The America's Cup. A record of
fifty years", Boston, 1902.
The artist used the following
parameters:
- moments when yachts are the closest (start of
either race, first race preferred and finally retained)
- wind: W-SW,
approx 18 knots with gusts
- time: 11.11 am November 10th (late autumn
sun direction and elevation
- starboard tack, heading approx 180
degrees (South)
- Atalanta: over-canvassed, showing excessive
heel
- appropriate national ensigns and burgees
- respective
sail sets consistent with news reports
- spectator fleet consistent
with news reports
- weather details consistent: rain squall recently
passed
- sunlight: no reports of presence, absence -- possible but
likely infrequent
- both hulls painted black as per period
