to compete for the cup the following Tollesbury men were onboard: Edward Heard,
1st mate; Leonard Frost, mastheadman; Albert Heard, bowsprit-end man; Uriah
Leavett, Uriah Heard; Walter Bibby; Walter Leavett; Ben Heard; Arthur South and
Jack Layzell. Uriah Leavett was drowned from the VERUNA [VARUNA ?] off Clacton
in 1926.
Comment 20 May 2012 by Daniel Simons:
Harold Cranfield of Rowhedge is immediately behind the bag carried by one of
the men front left. His cousin William Cranfield ( son of Capt. William
Cranfield of the VALKYRIEs ) was also among the crew and could be the man behind
Sir Thomas Lipton's left elbow. Harold became 1st Mate of Lord and Lady
Fairhaven's steam yacht SAPPHIRE and captain of Baron Empain's s.y.
HELIOPOLIS. Harold's brothers Charles and Arthur were on board SHAMROCK IV at
her launch. More than thirty men sailed for New York in 1914, half on Lipton's
steam yacht ERIN and half on SHAMROCK; they swapped over at the Azores. On
reaching New York war had been declared and the races did not take place until
1920.
