DESCRIPTION SITE :

Pencil sketch of the yacht 'Enterprise', signed center right: 'John Mecray', and dated: '(C) 82'. The pencil sketch showing a typical Mecray cut-off view of the hull, boom and lower section of the sails and mast. The detail is outstanding and is very typical of Mecray's work. The deck fittings, helm as well as sails, rigging and hardware are very accurately rendered. There are seventeen figures on deck. On the bow, there is a group of sailors feeding sail to the bowman. Around the mast, there are figures hauling lines. At the stern dressed in more formal attire is Harold Vanderbilt at the wheel and his advisors. The detail in the sails is outstanding. One can see the sail seams and the wrinkling at the tention points on the sails. One gets a sense of motion viewing the hull cutting through the water. (PA-453)

Note: The yacht 'Enterprise' was the first of the 'J's' to compete in the American's Cup in the year 1930 against Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V. Enterprise was designed by W. Starling Burgess. Enterprise was 120.9 feet overall, 22.1 feet in beam and she drew 14.6 feet.
