COLUMBIA LEAVES SHAMROCK BEHIND; British Yacht Loses by More Than Ten Minutes. COLUMBIA OUTSAILS THE BRITISH YACHT

NEWPORT, R.I., Oct. 16. -- After seven failures to accomplish the feat, the first of the series of races for the America's Cup was sailed yesterday. The result was that the American yacht crossed the finish line the victor by more than ten minutes. There was not much enthusiasm at the line, because from the start to the finish the race had been a procession, with Columbia constantly increasing a lead which she established soon after crossing the line at the beginning of the contest.
