Sir Thomas Lipton bequeathed his collection of photographs, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia to the Mitchell Library where it is still housed. In 1999, the collection was showing signs of degradation and conservation was required. Unilever, who now own the Lipton brand, were approached and funded the conservation and digitisation costs.

William Gardner, one of the world’s foremost naval architects, is born in Oswego, N.Y., son of the late William Gardner and Frances C. Gardner. He entered Cornell University when he was only 15 years old and was graduated in 1880.
He worked for a time in the Delaware River Iron Ship Building Company, studying all angles of ship construction in the mold loft, in the foundry, in the yard and at fitting, then sailed for the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, England.

David Monteiro is a native of Plymouth, Massachusetts. As a child, he showed an aptitude for drawing and creativity that became more evident throughout his adolescent years.
David continued his education at Massachusetts College of Art where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts.

Maarten Platje was born in Rotterdam in 1967.Already in his youth, the Dutch landscape with its waterways and ships was the subject of his drawings and paintings.
