YACHTING IN HEAVY SEAS — THE GRACIE DEFEATED ON TIME ALLOWANCE.

Copyright © The New York Times - Published: October 21, 1881 : Yachting 20 miles to the windward in a heavy sea is fine sport for yachtsmen who are not fond of smooth water, but it is not very easy work. The race yesterday was the last of the series sailed by first class sloops of the New-York Yacht Club, and the course was laid 20 miles to the windward of the point of Sandy Hook.

Livonia Again Beaten - Sappho Wins Easily

The fourth of the series of matches was fixed for the 21st on the early morning of which day the committee-boat Seth Low, with the judges on board, left the foot of Desbrosses street at 7h 30m a.m. and steaming down found the Columbia lying at anchor off Staten Island.

Capt. Barr was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but removed with his parents at an early age to Gourock on the Clyde. Here the famous skipper sailed his first race and began his career as a yachtsman, which resulted in the first 12 years of racing in an average of 10 winnings a year, all in small boats.
Capt. Barr during his career had charge of the Neptune, a Fife boat, in which he won 35 prizes out of 50 starts, all sailed in Scotch and Irish waters.

Born in Wivenhoe in 1850, John Carter began sailing at a young age aboard "smacks", the typical fishing boats of Rowhedge and its neighbourhood. At the age of 22, he helmed small yachts and in 1875, he distinguished himself as the skipper of the 10-ton Lancer and later of the 110-ton cutter Moina.
His reputation led to him taking command of the Genesta, the English challenger for the fifth America's Cup. The American yacht Puritan won the first race.
