A son arrivée à New York, Shamrock a été regréé rapidement pour la course et a effectué plusieurs essais au large de Sandy Hook, pendant lesquels il a semblé être une véritable sorcière dans les petits airs. Le 13 septembre, il a connu un accident, sa corne en acier a flambé et est tombée. Ses espars étaient trop légers pour ses voiles, ce qui provoquait une perte de vitesse. Il était commandé par le capitaine Archie Hogarth assisté par le capitaine Robert Wringe.
