against a promising architect George Lennox Watson.

No sooner had Galatea followed in the wake of Genesta as a defeated challenger than Albion's sons set out for another trial for the cup. This time the challenge came from Scotland, the Royal Clyde Yacht Club sending a letter proposing a race in 1887 on behalf of Mr. James Bell, with a boat of about the size of the Mayflower.

Boston faced up to the British threat

After Mr. George L. Watson, the leading yacht designer of Great Britain, had visited America, it was then reported that his forthcoming yacht would be of phenomenal speed, combining the best points of American as well as English racers.

Two out of three races were decided upon for the international series, one over the inside course, one to windward and return outside Sandy Hook, and the third, if necessary, triangular, over an outside course. The date set for the first race was September 27th.

In the minds of very many people the question of the relative merits of the Volunteer and Thistle, as individuals, and the centerboard sloop and the cutter, as types, was emphatically set at rest yesterday afternoon, when the Volunteer crossed the finishing line so far ahead of the Thistle that the latter became an object for sympathy. The sloop apparently outsailed her from the start to the finish.

The Volunteer defeated the Thistle yesterday in the windward work, and in this did precisely what was expected of her. The Volunteer began to eat out to windward immediately after the start, and soon showed that she was moreover, able to outfoot her antagonist when close-hauled.

The third "Deed of Gift"

Following the problems caused by the false waterline length of Thistle and alarmed by the growing British threat, the New York Yacht Club has decided to amend the Deed of Gift. This will be the beginning of a period of controversy that might have put an end to this story.
