Roy Cross was born in London, April 23, 1924. His first interest was aeroplanes and he became a member of the Society of Aviation Artists in 1952. He was largely self-taught but for a time studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, and the St. Martin's School of Fine Arts.
By the end of the second world war, Cross was a leading journalist and illustrator of aircraft subjects. In the 1960's, his interests widened to the subject of historic sail. His commitment of marine paintings of this type grew as his aircraft interests waned, and since he held his first one-man show in 1973, he has been painting marines as a full time profession ever since. His output is entirely absorbed by the American market, which is very appreciative of well researched and beautifully crafted paintings of historical maritime subjects.
He was elected a full member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1977, his first year of exhibition.
