Easy victory for Shamrock V
If Shamrock V was clearly dominated on the water, she widely wins for the number of images. Certainly because of the short career of the American boat while the English yacht still sailing. But the book of Harold S. Vanderbilt widely compensates for this with many pictures and wealth of information on the 1930 season of the America's Cup.

Rhode Island 1930: On sea trials for the America's Cup, the eventual cup winner ENTERPRISE [right] holds off WEETAMOE and YANKEE. After painstaking historical research, this 20in x 30in painting of a victory for the New York Yacht Club syndicate's J Class yacht by the British marine artist Adrian Rigby is currently on sale in the USA.

In an America’s Cup trial race, owner and skipper George Nichols jibes Weetamoe around a mark as Mike Vanderbilt and Enterprise follow close astern. Though very evenly matched, Enterprise would ultimately prove the faster boat and go on to defend the Cup in 1930.

The painting depicts the scene as it may have looked from the transom of Yankee, on one of the races in Long Island Sound, in the first summer of the J Class. With Weetamoe to the left and Whirlwind to the right. On the far left is J.P. Morgan’s motor yacht Corsair and on the far right Mr. Vanderbilt’s motor yacht Vara.

The races for America's Cup

MT. HOPE & ENTERPRISE
The 1930 America's Cup defender Enterprise passes the walking-beam steamer Mount Hope as she sails out of the Narragansett Bay for her trials. She would prove unbeatable against Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V later that summer.

Mike Vanderbilt's state-of-the-art Enterprise beats into heavy seas during the third race of the America's Cup challenge, 17 September, 1930. On the opposite tack is Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V, already down two races in the best of seven series. Unable to take the pounding, in a moment Shamrock will lose her halyard and mainsail, handing an easy victory to Enterprise.

Martin Swan RSMA - Shamrock V racing Enterprise off Rhode Island, New York - Americas Cup 1930. - This painting shows the yachts soon after the start of the third race, when Shamrock held the lead, the only time indeed that Sir Thomas Lipton’s yacht was in such a position in the entire seven race series. Soon after, Sir Thomas, on his motor yacht Erin, pictured LHS, watched as Shamrock’s main halyard parted in increasingly difficult seas, and her sail crumpled onto the deck. Race over.

1930 America's Cup
1930 America's Cup - Oil on canvas 26” x 40” 1996 - Harold S Vanderbilt’s J Class yacht Enterprise racing Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock V. In the third race in hazy weather over a windward leeward course, Lipton won the start, but whilst Shamrock’s crew were concentrating on getting in the mainsheet, Vanderbilt put in a quick tack to clear his wind and went on to win.

Dimensions: 50×35 cm Technique: Gouache The Shamrock V was an America’s Cup Challange racing yacht, it was build in 1930 and had a length of 119 ft. In the background the opponent Enterprise is visible, which caused the owner of the Shamrock V, Sir Thomas Lipton, poor nights sleep.

THE CHASE
In the tradition of his most popular work John Mecray comes in close to the action in 1930 as the newly launched J-Class sloop Shamrock V races downwind with all sails set. King George V's Britannia can be seen in close pursuit.. Shamrock will soon depart for Newport Rhode Island to challenge for the America's Cup.

The J-Class sloops Shamrock V and Endeavour raced again in Newport, RI on August 26, 1989, after a 52 year absence. John was in the afterguard of Shamrock as Ted Turner, aboard Endeavour yells for room at Gary Jobson, steering Shamrock. The tactic didn't work but Endeavour's faster hull speed ruled the day.
